Since there was a war between so many groups in Sierra Leone, in the late 16th century the British slave traders took advantage of this warfare to gain entry into the country. In 1807, the parliament in Britain decided that slave trade was coming to an end, hence Freetown soon changed into a crown colony. Most of the slaves released were settled in Freetown. After Sierra Leone gained independence from the colonialists, the government in Freetown decided to give the natives their leaders through voting. From 1961 to 1978, there was a political party in Sierra Leone called the Sierra Leone Peopleââ¬â¢s party (SLPP). The SLPP was a governing party in the year 1961 to 1967; however, it later became the opposition party from year 1967 to 1978.
